Objective: This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the physical burden of workers during apple sorting tasks according to loading height. This evaluation utilized electromyography to measure muscle load, motion data from IMU sensors to assess worker posture, and subjective discomfort assessments.
Background: Physical burdens in field cultivation arise from peak periods of crop operations and various musculoskeletal strain factors. Apple sorting and harvesting tasks are particularly demanding for farmers due to handling approximately 20kg loads, leading to significant physical strain.
Method: To assess the physical burden associated with the transportation and loading of harvest boxes during sorting tasks, experiments were conducted in a laboratory setting that simulated actual working conditions in sorting facilities. The evaluation included electromyography to measure muscle activity, ergonomic assessments of worker posture, and the Borg RPE scale to gauge perceived exertion.
Results: The findings indicated that the average muscle activity for transport tasks was 17.2%MVC, while 16.2%MVC for loading tasks, showing relatively higher muscle activity during transport tasks. The upper trapezius (UT) muscle activity increased with workload for both tasks. Posture assessments rated transport tasks at RULA 3.95, REBA 3.10, and AWBA 2.64, whereas loading tasks were rated at RULA 3.97, REBA 2.98, and AWBA 2.40. These ratings suggest a "Necessary soon (High)" intervention level at Level 3 or higher for RULA and REBA assessments. Subjective discomfort scores averaged 12.9 for transport tasks and 13.2 for loading tasks, indicating a "Somewhat hard" level of discomfort. Discomfort increased from 3 tiers or more, reaching a "Hard" level at 6 tiers.
Conclusion: Both transport and loading tasks showed high muscle activity and posture risk at 6 tiers, with subjective discomfort scores exceeding 15 points ("Hard"). The upper body experienced a higher burden than the lower body, with ergonomic assessment tools such as RULA and REBA reflecting higher risks than AWBA. To mitigate the burden of apple sorting tasks, it is crucial to develop ergonomic equipment that minimizes upper-body and waist strain, along with improvements in the working environment and handling heavy loads.
