This article is to explain the origins and reasons of the Shilla and T'ang Alliance(羅唐同盟). It was in 640 that the Korean Peninsular condition was so much dangerous. And so Shilla(新羅) could not but help allying with Chinese powerful T'ang(唐) Empire. Traditional historians focused on this Shilla's approaching to the powerful T'ang Empire said that before the Alliance two nation's relationship was so much deeper that the Alliance could be easily accomplished.
But I could not accept these older interpretations in this historical field. The steadily uninterrupted harmonious approaches between Shilla and T'ang relationship by the older historians never explained the dynamic converge and turning point stage's atmosphere in the Shilla and T'ang Alliance period. And so the Alliance, I think, is very dynamic turing point to understand Shilla's foreign relationship toward T'ang Empire.
Therefore the pre-Alliance situation in the Korean Peninsular should be considered firstly. At that time, there are three powerful states in the Korean Peninsular such as Koguryo(高句麗), Baekjae(百濟), Shilla. These states had tried to obtain their dominance through the assistance of powerful T'ang Empire independently. Specially, at that time, T'ang could not forgive Shilla's undetermined and ambiguous approaching to Koguryo, an anti-T'ang state that had struggled against T'ang in the Peninsular. And so T'ang's approach was very determined about Shilla's ambiguous gesture against Koguryo. Now Shilla could not but turn to T'ang to protect her safety in this condition.
After this Shilla's approach to T'ang, in 648 Shilla's Kim Chun-Chu(金春秋) went to T'ang for further harmonious relationship between two states.
Specially, I focused Shilla's dynamic foreign relationship attitudes toward T'ang Empire after 648. Also, Shilla imported the sophisticate and superior T'ang's institutional system to enhance their relationship.
Some historians said that this Shilla's approach could be interpreted as her self-determined national sovereignty depraved. But Shilla's approach should be understood as wholly other prospects. Because Shilla was very dangerous at that time, She could not but depend on the powerful T'ang Empire.
In conclusion, Shilla's skillful approach, I think, is so much pragmatic and insightful in this dangerous period.
