It is 100 years since Protestant church was built in Korea. Now Christianity has been settled and Korea has become one of main oountries which send many missionaries. It is thought that it is time to revaluate the service in the view of Bible. At service minister's ceremonial dress has been differently worn acoording to denominations and tradition. However. now is the time to change into new design in acoordance with Koreanization and globeralization. This is why I started this study.


Black robe worn now as ceremonial dress is the one which imitated the street dress of professors. judges. officials in Rome. However black oolor means solemnity, grief. repentance. so it doesn't go with Bible and Christian dogma. Or as
uniform has not been made yet. it can't be worn, and band oolor of Catholic has been worn. Therefore the neccessity of makino uniforms is uroent in Korean Christianity.
Christian ceremonial dress has accorded with religious dogma. The sacrificial robes of the priests of old testament showed the model of Messiah Jesus Christ coming. That is why God Himself indicated in detail the kinds of sacrificial robes, the way of manufacture and wearing. In those times, the role of the priest was the middleman of between God and man, that is to say, to hear the sinners and forgive them instead of God.
In Catholic, which imitated the system of old testament, Father performs ceremony of mass, and believers confess their sin to God and are forgiven through Father. N3 they think the ceremony itself means spiritual one and faith itself, ceremonial dress makes a role of meditator of approaching close God. Therefore it has developed variously and gorgeously.
Because in New testament times, Jesus, who came as the priest, was crucified as a sacrifice and redeemed us from sin, everyone has been able to pray and meet God through Jesus' name, N3 minister's role has been emphasized as leading believers and proclaiming God's words, his costume is not strict or gorgeous but appears at least symbolic. N3 Christian ceremonial dress has developed differently according to the kinds of service and the emphasis of dogma, ministers wear ceremonial dress or not.
The beginning of Christian ceremonial dress was Calvin's contention who separated from Catholic. He insisted that ceremonial dress of Catholic had no Biblic reason and was formal and hypocritical. He wore ceremonial dress of college on the ground of simplicity when he sermonized. This black robe became the standard of ceremonial dress.
However, this black robe is thought to be non-Biblic and not to match Korean feeling. This is why we need new design. Since 1995, the Methodist Church has wom ceremonial dress transformed from Korean dress-white outer coat. Uniforms have not been wom yet, but in 1977, Church development association of Korean all Christian Churches Union publiched [Uniform show for ministers. According to my individual interviews and the sUNey of Korean all Christian Churches Union, theological meaning, dignity, Korean nativeness, practicalness, and simplicity are the standard of design researches.
Therefore we are to design ceremonial dress and uniform like following.
The color of ceremonial dress is used as white which espresses Christian thought and minister's impression and can give Korean image, White color means joy, glory, festival, victory, congratulation, and is Korean color. Season by season we use materials such as white linen, silk, sheer silk, and T.C, On the basis of basic dogma-everyone priest, the design is not too gorgeous and too decorative, and the usage of Koreaan dress sleeve line, which considers minister's dignity and authority. The length is that of Korean overcoat. On the right and left part of the front body plate, attached out collar of a coat and at the both sides of armpit, attached reinforcing cloth strips, and on the center of the back plate, attached wide outer cellar of a coat to the right and left part, and provide much room by pleating face pleats.
The center line of sleeve is the same to the round line of the sagging under-part of a coat arm. Sleeve's front and back plate cut separately and sew together. We make the center line stiff by stitching the outer part of the center line again. To give Korean image, we make a coat collar facing coat collar of waistcoat. By piping the under tip of coat collar with purple woven silk, we emphasize Korean dress beauty line. To give the grace and chang of clothes, we fold the sleeve's tip widely to the upper direction. The textile is woven silk and stitches A and Q in black color. The fron large section of coat is adjusted with inner buttons and attaches inner pocket to look neat. A sleeve is a raglan sleeve, which is a little different from Korean dress sleeve line. By piping the armhole line with white woven silk, it doesn't look short and small when not wearing a suit in the ceremonial dress. According to church calendar, they wear white, black, red, violet, green neck1ie and dress shirts in the ceremonial dress, but the difference of light needs and we stitch the pattem which symbolizes ministers.
Uniforms are transformed from Korean jacket and vest. Korean jacket form is made by shortening the length of the above ceremonial dress. Korean vest form is made by cutting the Korean jacket's sleeves and piping the traditional vest's the armhole line. In the uniform, the dress shirts and necktie of the ceremonial dress, are wom, According to the season and tastes, a jacket and a vest can be wom together or separately. Uniform's color and material aren't limited.
