The motif of social conflict, which I aim to deal with in this paper, has been the most important material for many artistic texts. The social upheaval of 20th century demanded new type of lifestyles from Korean people. 1his change had a great influence on family relationship, as well as aspects of love. This paper attempts to investigate the aspects of 'social conflict' in the 1930's when popular dramas were very briskly performed.
The fact that the motif of free love frequently appear in most popular tragic dramas in the 1930's implies love stories are associated with the very essential features of this period. love stories in this period shows that free love is closely connected with formation of modem subject. In these texts, conventional family system remains as an obstacle to this free love. To keep women's chastity, which is related to conservation of lineage, is one of main topics of the popular tragic dramas in the 1930's. Instead of focusing on the reinforcement of dominant ideology, these dramas reveal various symptoms of social conflict.
