This paper is to describe the process that guttural ‘ㅇ’ is deleted on /r-V/. I classified linguistic features that guttural deletion rule is applied as ‘pattern that phonetic change is applied’, ‘pattern that phonetic change is not applied’, ‘hypercorrection’ and ‘corrected pattern’. By analyzing public awareness that each pattern is reflected, I wish to describe correlation between orthographic patterns and public awareness on guttural deletion rule.
It began to delete Guttural ‘ㅇ’ from the 15th century. There is difficulty to conjecture that guttural was deleted in the 15th century because the case that guttural deletion rule is applied appeared rarely in the 15th century.
So, I used hypercorrection to solve the problem. Hypercorrection is a linguistic feature that public recognizes a phonetic change excessively. It is an orthographic pattern that public awareness is reflected, therefore I expect to describe the process that guttural ‘ㅇ’ is deleted advisably if use hyper- correction.
Hypercorrection appeared first in the 16th century and was reduced or disappeared in the 19th century. A guttural deletion rule was generalized enough to recognize for public because hypercorrection and phonetic change were relative in the 16th century but disappeared in the 19th century.
I divide the pattern that phonetic change is not applied into two: one prior phonetic change and corrected pattern, I regard the pattern only appeared 19th century that guttural deletion rule is not applied as corrected pattern. Corrected pattern reflects public awareness and appears on time that phonetic change is completed. Based on this, I confirm that guttural deletion rule was completed already in the 19th century.
