There are two primary reasons to examine rural poor women's health care decisions. First, poor women tend to be less healthy than their richer counterparts and rural people tend to have poorer health status than their urban counterparts. Second, parents' health status plays an important role in the health status of children. However, most studies with respect to the poor's health care have focused on children rather than parents. The purpose of this study is to examine key factors affecting health care decisions of rural poor women. The data came from the first wave of the NC223 project, Rural Families Speak: Tracking Their Well-being and Functioning in the Context of Welfare Reform. Analysis of the data revealed that medical insurance and transportation assistance increase the number of visits to a doctor, while emotional/physical/sexual abuse decreases the number of doctor visits.
