The purpose of this study was to show the brief history of publishing, -structure, and characteristics of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and its Korean version, Britannica World Encyclopedia.
The Encyclopaedia Britannica has been continuously published from its first edition in 1768, to the present 15th edition. It has been one of the most famous and reliable references in the world, for its unique structure and characteristics. The 15th edition has four categories, Macropaedia for 'knowledge in depth', Micropaedia for 'ready reference', Propaedia for 'outline of knowledge', Index for 'searching with terms'. Britannica Book of the Year has been published since 1938 a yearly supplement. The Britannica World Encyclopedia. since 1994, has been published with a similar structure and Britannica's traditional standard, except for the Macropaedia and Micropaedia system. Additionally, it has been reedited based on Korean culture and point of view.
There is no consideration of digital version including CD-ROM or Web- based encyclopedia in this essay, for the purpose of focus on the printed version. I think that we need more discussion and study on the detailed dimension of traditional encyclopedias and their editing processes which have been accumulated since the period of enlightenment, even for rapidly changing circumstances of the knowledge and information by IT technology.
