Hongcheon iron ore bodies are embedded as a stratiform in Precambrian metamorphic rocks derived from sedimentary rocks. As a whole ore deposits show a lenticular shape whose host rocks are quartz-feldspathic banded gneiss which changes gradationally to biotite banded gneiss. The matamorphic rocks show generally greenschist facies which is superimposed by epidote-amphibolite facies later. The occurrence of epidote-amphibolite facies is restricted. The metamorphic rocks are mainly composed of quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, biotite, chlororite, muscovite and hornblende accompanied locally with garnet. The coexisting mafic minerals show relatively stable equilibrium in distribution of elements during both in the first and second regional metamorphism, respectively. The iron deposits mainly consist of magnetite with quartz, plagioclase, and calcite. Pyrite, chalcopyrite, and hematite occur as minor ore minerals. Magnetite may be a primary mineral. The sulfide may be secondarily formed with calcite by which are introduced at later stage. Hematite may be secondarily formed by martitization of magnetite during either regional metamorphism or introduction of carbonate-sulfide materials. The mineralogy and occurrence of magnetite ore bodies and the characteristics of host matamorphic rocks may suggest that the deposits may be grouped as a sedimentary origin-metamorphosed iron deposits and classified as an oxide facies among sedimentary iron deposits.
