Previous research examining the effectiveness of international joint ventures (IJVs) has focused on the differences in the background of IJVs’ parent firms, while little attention has been given to IJVs themselves. This study combines control theory and the perspective of knowledge integration to develop a general model of IJVs technological innovation. Specifically, we examine how IJV and parent involvement in the strategic decision control influences the technological innovation of IJV. We analyze this model from the perspective of structural equation model with 96 manufacturing and service-oriented IJVs in China as the samples for this study. Our results indicate that decision control positively affects IJVs’ technological innovation in different ways, and knowledge acquisition plays a basic role This study sets out to contribute to the understanding of the roles of IJVs’ decision control in gaining their competitive advantage of management innovation.
