Shorebirds forage on intertidal mudflats and roost at inland roost sites forced up by the rising tide. Resting condition in roost sites affects the body condition of the shorebird, which could, eventually, affect the overall fitness. Therefore, shorebirds should select roost sites that maximize their fitness. Until now, few studies have examined whether resting condition in roost sites affects the shorebirds’ roost site selection. This study documents the relationship between the number of individuals using the roost site and resting conditions (e.g., comfortable resting: sleeping, preening and foraging or uncomfortable resting: head-up, alert and moving) at three roost sites in Kanghwa Island, Republic of Korea. Bar-tailed Godwits Limosa lapponica, Eastern Curlews Numenius madagascariensis, Great Knots Calidris tenuirostris, Grey Plovers Pluvialis squatarola, Green Shanks Tringa nebularia, Terek Sandpipers Xenus cinereus and Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus were observed at the roost sites. Among the three roost sites, each species had different main roosting sites, and resting conditions varied between each site for each of the shorebird species. In our study, Grey Plovers did not select the roost site based on the resting condition (p=0.116), but Green Shanks did (p<0.05). Although other possible causal factors were not included in this study, it shows that some shorebirds select roost sites based on other factors, else the availability of comfortable resting.
