    The Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) intra-oceanic arc (IOA) system is a natural laboratory for studying how new subduction zones initiate and subsequently evolve. The central aim of Expedition 352 (Aug. - Sept. 2014) was to delineate and characterize the magmatic stratigraphy of the outer Bonin forearc in order to define key magmatic and tectonic processes associated with subduction initiation (SI). By drilling the outer Bonin forearc and comparing its magmatic chemostratigraphy with that of previous JAMSTEC Shinkai 6500 manned submersible studies and supra-subduction zone (SSZ) ophiolites, some specific objectives of IODP Expedition 352 include: (a) evaluation of existing SI models; (b) testing of the proposition that most ophiolites are fragments of forearc lithosphere formed during SI; and (c) assessment of the hypothesis that MORB-like forearc basalts (FAB) mark the onset of SI at the IBM IOA system.
