Regarding with limited resources and increasing demand of fossil fuels, dimethyl ether is attracted much as an alternative of conventional diesel fuel due to its clean burn and wide variety of resources such as natural gas, biomass, food waste etc. This paper reviews the development and progress of its technical potential and confirm its feasibility for automotive engines. The review compares its physical properties and molecular structure of DME with conventional fuels. Fuel supply system and injection system required the modification from conventional system due to high vapor pressure for liquefaction, low density and viscosity characteristics of DME. As a result, spray characteristics shown shorter spray tip penetration, wider angle and higher amount of droplet size. For combustion of DME, ignition in constant volume combustion chamber as well as in compression ignition engine results were shown that low amount of soot emissions from no carbon to carbon structure. Also, moderate amount of HC and CO emissions can be obtained compared with conventional compression ignition combustion. NOx emissions from DME engine has potential to meet with NOx regulation by utilizing exhaust gas recirculation as well as lean-NOx trap. Finally, the review identified the numerical studies relating to chemical kinetics and controlling methods of advanced compression ignition.
