Gilberto Freyre is one of the most relevant social thinkers of Brazil, and also one of the most controversial, his legacy marked by a singular interpretation of the Lusophone world. His understanding of the Portuguese colonization process in the tropics brings up a perspective in which the eastern presence appears in a pulsed manner, so that we could not understand the “world that the Portuguese created” as an exclusively European enterprise. On the contrary, according Freyre the Iberian peoples and the Portuguese in particular are marked as being between two worlds, between Europe and Africa, and also between the West and the East. In this work, I seek to analyze the conception of this east in Freyre’s work as well as its presence in the Portuguese-speaking world, especially with regard to the cultural constitution process in Brazil, and considering that this country is a cultural synthesis between the values of Easterners and Westerners.
