This dissertation is an attempt to answer the question, “Why did Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, raise Kim Ilsung and the other Korean communists of the 88th Brigade(the 88th Independent Sniper Brigade) to the height of the leading influence in North Korean politics?”
The time range of this dissertation extends from 1935 to 1945. And the result of research is summarized as follows.
Firstly, the Soviet Union summoned the survivors of the Northeast Anti-Japan Allied Forces to the Maritime Province of Siberia when they were on the brink of collapse. The Soviet Union established the 88th Brigade under the command of the Soviet Army utilizing the survivors of the Northeast Anti-Japan Allied Forces as one of the component parts of the brigade.
Secondly, the Soviet Union was preparing for the expansion of the sphere of influence at that time. And the establishment of the 88th Brigade was a part of the preparatory work for the expansion of the sphere of influence. It can be inferred from the context that The Korean communists of the 88th Brigade swore an oath of allegiance to the Soviet Union when they joined in the 88th Brigade.
Thirdly, among the Korean Communists of the 88th Brigade, Kim Ilsung was noticeable for the loyalty to the Soviet Union. As a matter of fact, he was an NKVD agent in the 88th Brigade.
Shortly after the Second World War, the Korean communists of the 88th Brigade were brought out to the North Korean political arena as the disguised local collaborators by the Soviet Union. And they grew to become the leading influence in North Korean politics. With regard to the Military-first policy of the North Korean regime, we may take many insights if we inquire into the Korean communists of the 88th Brigade.
