The number of articles regarding language in international business research fields were published and many scholars become to consider language as an important research topic in international business fields. Despite the increased language research in IB fields, we don’t know what kinds of research were done and what should be done in the future. This study extends existing studies to better understand the main streams of IB research. Our bibliometric study of articles published in the top twelve international business journals from 1975 to early 2016 permits deeper analyses than traditional literature reviews and insights into past trends and evolution of the literature.
We identify three main research trends: Cross-National Language Management, Language Management of Intra-Organization, Multilingual Management. We also compared the language research trends in IB and those in non-IB journals to know that the research trends between IB and Communication are similar. In order to understand who leads language research in international business field, additionally the IB-relatedness of author was calculated from three points of view: The IB relatedness of subjects, authors’ major, authors’ affiliation.
