Over the last two decades, labor standards have become a major issue in international trade. The relationship between trade agreements and labor standards is closely linked to the spectacular global changes in the means of production and the world of labor. The International Labor Organization (ILO) is recognized as the competent body to set and deal with international labor standards. The ILO"s Fundamental principles and rights at work and its Follow-up adopted in 1998 has come to form the basis of a vast majority of voluntary private standards and new generation trade agreements. It is important to examine how these agreements address labor issues and the participation in these agreements of developing country as Vietnam. In this paper, the authors focus on understanding labor standards and labor provisions in trade agreements and investigating the situation of Vietnam when joining trade agreement contain labor provisions as well as suggesting some implications. This article uses both quantitative and qualitative method to understand and investigate the related issues.
