Objective: Perceived sound quality of engine acceleration sounds was investigated with the purpose a) to find out and interpret dimensions in perceived sound quality, b) to find out the positions of the sounds based on different vehicle types in the dimensions, and c) to explore the relations between the perceptual dimensions and satisfaction. Background: Since engine acceleration sound can influence and build brand images of the motor manufacturing companies, there are many on-going researches to identify drivers’ perceived qualities and to enhance their satisfaction using the approaches of affective engineering and psychoacoustics. However, there are still in the lack of studies which investigate them based on the components that affect the engine acceleration sound such as vehicle types, engine categories, and vehicle brands. Method: Firstly, auditory terms as adjectives were collected from literature reviews related to various in-vehicle sound researches. They were subjectively evaluated on engine acceleration sounds of 33 vehicles by 36 participants. Factor analysis was performed to derive dimensions of perceived sound quality and to position the engine sounds in the perceptual dimensions using factor scores.
