Chinese relative clauses (RCs hereafter) are observed to exhibit some structural differences from English ones in terms of the existence of relative pronouns, overt wh-movement, the direction of modification, etc. It turns out that Chinese EFL learners are seen to perceive English RCs in somewhat deviant ways such as coordinate constructions, shi...de constructions, and pivotal constructions. In this paper, we delve into some aspects of Chinese RCs in comparison with English ones and introduce the afore-mentioned three constructions. These cross-linguistic differences in turn are seen to give rise to some perceptual difficulties with English RCs. For our discussion, we have conducted a survey among 35 Chinese college students to examine their perceptual patterns of English RCs. The findings of the survey reveal that most of the subjects put them into Chinese RCs. The subjects also opt for the other three constructions as an alternative way of their perception. These constructions are seen to prevail particularly with the OS type of RCs in non-restrictive relative clauses due to its affinity to the constructions in question.
