This study presents experimental results on honorification and tense mismatches in Korean Right Peripheral Ellipsis (RPE), a type of coordinate ellipsis in which the main predicate and optionally its dependents are missing in non-final conjuncts. Using acceptability judgment tasks, we tested competing hypotheses to determine whether and to what extent honorification and tense mismatches affect the acceptability of RPE sentences. Experiment results indicate that both honorification- and tense-mismatched RPE sentences are less acceptable than their grammatical unRPEed sources, but there was a crucial difference: the acceptability of honorification-mismatched RPE sentences was closer to that of their grammatical unRPEed counterparts, but the acceptability of tense-mismatched RPE sentences was closer to that of their ungrammatical unRPEed counterparts (Experiment 1). The results also suggest that the low acceptability of tense-mismatched RPE sentences is likely to indicate the effects of tense mismatches and not of ellipsis (Experiment 2). These results reject the widespread assumption that morphological mismatches in RPE are acceptable (Ahn & Cho, 2006; Park, 2009; Kim & Cho, 2012) and have implications for theories of honorification and tense.
