    In this study, the heat transfer performance of the plate heat exchanger was investigated, which was used as an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) evaporator. The experiments were conducted at the low mass flux range for a cascade heat utilization in a fourth-generation district heating and cooling system. By changing the R-245fa evaporation pressure and mass flux, the heat transfer mechanism was thoroughly analyzed with an internal process analysis. The two-phase heat transfer coefficient strongly depended on the heat flux. This indicated that flow boiling heat transfer was mainly dominated by the nucleate boiling mechanism. Because the single-phase heat transfer accounted for a large portion of the overall heat transfer, the heat transfer rate dropped quickly when both the R-245fa evaporation pressure and mass flux were increased.
