After the National Museum of Korea was relocated to Yongsan in 2005, the Children"s Museum of the National Museum of Korea was newly established as a separate entity. Since its inception on October 28, 2005, the Children"s Museum has been a children-centered museum and cultural education institution, providing various leisure activities to families.
The Children"s Museum has operated not only exhibition galleries but also educational programs for families and children. The Museum has developed its own programs and shared them with its affiliated museums.
This article goes over the Museum"s representative educational programs for children, their development progress and current operation, and the future direction for children"s education program.
Considering the social change, children"s educational program is required to find right methodology and direction with proper educational goals for the next generation. First, in terms of content, programs should lead children to recognize the importance of cultural heritage with love and understanding. Second, in terms of format, museum"s educational programs should be linked with online platform and public education so that more people can gain access to the quality museum education.
It is important that museum education provides the meaning and value of cultural heritage to children so that they realize the importance of cultural heritage. When educational programs are provided, they should be present both on-site and online in connection with individual and public education so that anyone can enjoy museum education. This is the mandate of national museum.
