The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in linguistic competence of two different levels of EFL learners revealed by their performance on a listening dictation test. In order to accomplish this purpose, the following research questions were posed. First, what differences in the language competence of two proficiency groups are revealed in their responses to a dictation test? Second, what are the survey results about difficulties of the listening class and learning activities? Data sources were 44 Korean EFL college students. Classical Test Theory was applied to obtain item statistics, i.e., item difficulty(facility) and discrimination as well as the differences in item difficulty indices of two groups. The findings of data analysis showed that 1) There were salient differences in the types of grammar constructs that yielded large or little discrepancy in terms of the rate of correct responses provided by two proficiency groups. 2) Large differences between two groups were found in the items requiring function words. Pedagogical implications from the research findings were also discussed.
