Purpose: This study examined the effects of a 10-week equipment-based Pilates program on upper-limb function, lymphedema, pain, and quality of life in breast cancer survivors with upper-limb lymphedema.
Methods: Twenty participants were randomly assigned to an equipment Pilates group (n=10) or a self-exercise group (n=10). Outcomes included upper-limb range of motion (ROM), arm circumference, pain (VAS), and quality of life (EORTC QLQ-BR23), assessed before and after the intervention. The Pilates group performed spring-resistance exercises using the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrel, while the self-exercise group followed a hospital-provided home program.
Result: The equipment Pilates group showed significant improvements in ROM, lymphedema, pain, and quality of life(p<.05). with greater changes than the self-exercise group (p<.05).
Conclusion: A 10-week equipment-based Pilates program effectively improved upper-limb function, reduced lymphedema, pain, and enhanced quality of life in breast cancer survivors. These results support its use as a practical rehabilitation strategy in clinical and community settings.
