초록·키워드
Lotte World in Jamsil, Seoul is a large-scale mixed-use complex organized around an indoor theme park that is physically separated from surrounding programs by a continuous wall. Since its completion in 1989, this spatial structure has remained largely unchanged, reinforcing a rigid division between fantasy and reality. While the wall was originally intended to protect the immersive theme-park experience and mitigate noise, it has also limited spatial interaction and adaptability within the complex. This study examines the wall not merely as a device of separation but as a critical spatial element that shapes relationships between fantasy and reality. Through an analysis of user behavior and comparative case studies of West Edmonton Mall and Mall of America, the research identifies the limitations of closed separation and the potential of selective permeability. Based on these findings, the study proposes a renovation-oriented approach that retains the wall while selectively transforming it according to programmatic requirements. By redefining the wall as a medium rather than a barrier, this research suggests a feasible strategy for renovation that preserves Lotte World’s distinctive spatial identity while enabling controlled interaction between fantasy and reality.
