The shadow that Jung speaks of is another side of a person that people ignore or exist in the unconscious. In other words, it is the dark side of the ego. It refers to the inferior character excluded from the ego or the negative aspects within the ego such as attachment, anger, greed, jealousy, victim mentality, and selfishness hidden in human nature. However, Jung did not define the psychological contents according to an unchanging framework, but saw such shadows as something that moved and changed. In other words, not only do shadows have evil functions, but they are viewed to be possible to be changed into creative and good functions.
Then how can the apparently destructive, dangerous and negative effects of shadows be converted to creative ones? The key lies in how much one is interested and works on finding the unconscious of
their ego to recognize the existence of the shadow. When one realizes this, changes in conscious occur and the negative effects of shadows can be retired.
Yoo Young-cheol became a serial killer because of his psychology of resistance against the structural contradictions of society and because of his personal experiences such as nderprivileged home environment and severance of human relations.
It is analyzed that the reason why Yoo Young-cheol targeted rich elderly was not for money, but as his resistance against the structural inconsistencies of society. The crimes resulting from such structural contradiction of society were his expression of frustration against society in which he aims at living a better life, but is unable to do so because of the various restrictions in reality, and thus the targets of his crimes were unspecified people.
It is assessed that he targeted women such as those working in massage parlors and phone sex lines because of his hate and animosity against women because he was physically and mentally while he was serving time in prison, and after proposing to a phone sex worker upon being released from prison, who turned down his proposal because he had already been married in the past and had a criminal record.
These were the actions of Yoo Young-cheol''s shadow who had a skewed personality due to his resentment against the structural contradictions of society, his underprivileged childhood, and poor growth environment such as not having social relations. But on the other hand, our society''s tendency for mutual distrust that blindly convicts that person as a ''bad man'' due to prejudice, bias and jumping to conclusions and that he would certainly be up to no good most likely would have played a part in this. We take competition in our capitalistic society as natural and view those bumped out of the competition as losers. By branding others as losers, we are indirectly committing murder. In other words, the problem regarding Yoo Young-cheol''s case should be the common responsibility of each and every person making up society. In order to fix this, we must first
recognize what our shadows shown in the target that we criticize, curse and ridicule, and become individually conscious of it.
The Bible teaches not to judge others. This means to first find all of those dualities that are unethical, but projected on another person.
Members of society should strive not engage in behavior that projects their negative shadows on others.
