한국국제정치학회(KAIS)는 국제정치학 및 이와 관련된 학자들과 국제관계 사무에 종사하는 전문연구가들의 학문연구와 교류를 장려하고 실질적으로 지원할 목적으로 결성된 사회과학 영역의 대표적 학회 중 하나이다. 1956년 05월 30일에 창립된 본 학회는 본연의 설립 목적에 따라 회원 간의 자유로운 학문 활동을 지원해왔으며, 그 결과 회원의 수도 계속 증가하여 현재 2천 2백여 명의 회원이 가입되어 있다. 본 학회의 연구 결과는 구체적 정책영역에 적용되어 왔으며, 특히 국제관계 및 외교·안보·통일 분야 등에 있어 국가정책과 국내외 여론 형성에 지대한 영향을 미쳐왔다. 본 학회는 창립 이후 연례학술대회와 국제학술회의, 그리고 특별학술회의를 매년 개최하여 국내외 국제관계 관련 쟁점들을 다루어왔다. 특히 국제학술회의에서는 한반도를 위시한 동북아 국제관계 문제를 집중 탐구함으로써 대외정책 수립과 여론 형성을 주도해 왔다고 자부하고 있다. 1963년에는 학회보인 『국제정치논총(KJIR)』을 창간하여 국내 최고 수준의 논문을 게재해 오고 있으며, 국제정치학 관련 교과서 및 도서목록 등을 편찬하여 국제정치학 연구 수준을 발전시켜 왔다. 그 결과『국제정치논총』은 한국연구재단 2018년도 우수등재학술지 선정 심사에서 사회과학분과 최종 3종으로 선정되었다.『국제정치논총』이 국내 사회과학분야 수백 종의 등재학술지 중에서 가장 우수한 3종의 하나로 선정되었음은 그간 한국국제정치학회가 쌓아온 대내외적 학문적 성과의 결실이 아닐 수 없다. 이후 2023년 한국연구재단의 학술지 재인증평가 결과, 우수등재학술지 유지 판정을 받았으며, 다음 평가는 6년 후로 예고되어 있다. 앞으로도 이러한 전통을 이어 나가기 위해 한국국제정치학회는 최선을 다할 것이다. 또한 2010년부터 영문국제정치논총이 Korean Journal of International Studies(KJIS)로 분리되어 독자적인 저널로 발간되고 있으며, KCI 등재학술지이자 2017년 09월 톰슨 로이터 社 Emerging Sources Citation Index(ESCI) 색인 수록 된 학술지이며, 2024년 02월 SCOPUS 등재 심사 통과 이후, 2024년 06월 SCOPUS 색인 수록된 학술지이다.
The Korean Association of International Studies (KAIS) was founded in 1956 to promote research and education related to international relations by Korean political scientists who shared the importance of international relations for South Korea and the understanding that international relations has its own distinct scope and methodology. The association is free from any ideological inclinations as well as political prejudices. Further, it does not identify with any political parties or administrations. For over six decades since its inception, the association has been successful in upholding these principles. For more than half a century since its inception, the KAIS has shown remarkable developments. Starting with a membership of no less than ten, KAIS has become one of the most prominent academic associations in Korea with more than 2,200 individual and institutional members. The KAIS has regularly held annual meetings, international conferences and special seminars on various themes of domestic and foreign policies. The KAIS publishes two academic journals, one in Korean and one in English. Also it published numerous numbers of books and text books on international studies, contributing the quality of scholarship in this field. In addition to the growth in its activities and membership, the KAIS also takes pride in meeting theoretical and policy needs of the South Korean government as well as universities. Thanks to its past achievements, dedication of its members, and adherence to principles, the KAIS today is one of the most respected and representative academic associations in Korea. As a result, the KJIR has been selected as one of the three social science journals to receive the Excellent Accredited Journal certification by the Korean Citation Index (KCI) of the National Research Foundation of Korea, a feat which has been made possible by the academic achievements of the KAIS both within the Korean and global academia. The next KCI review is planned for 2029, and the KAIS will strive to continue the tradition of excellence. In 2010, this journal was greatly reformed the title and policy of journal to increase expertise and further improve the quality of journal. The title was changed from the year of 2010 as Journal of The Korean Journal of International Studies. Published three times a year(April, August, December), KJIS is a peer reviewed journal indexed and abstracted in the SCOPUS, Emerging Sources Citation Index, Social Scisearch, Journal Citation Reports/Social Sciences Edition and Korea Citation Index. The KJIS endeavors to attract original articles devoted not only to perennial issues in East Asia including the Korean Peninsula but also impacts of diverse perspectives at the global and regional levels. Through these efforts the KJIS provides an important channel of scholarly ideas and produces quality work for the field.
