This paper aims to discuss the significance and application of the method of stratum analysis in the study of Sino-Korean pronunciations. Chinese characters were employed as the official writing system in the Korean Peninsula, and the situation led Korean language to develop its own reading pronunciations of Chinese characters. Sino-Korean pronunciations sometimes retain features of early Chinese phonology lost in all the modern Chinese varieties, and they also provide significant clues to the study of Korean language history. The phonological system of Sino-Korean pronunciations was formulated through the long term cultural exchange between Korea and China. The system does not reflect the phonology of a Chinese dialect at a certain time period, but it is a complicated system that consists of multiple layers which reflect Chinese varieties from various places and time periods. In order to understand and make adequate use of the materials of Sino-Korean pronunciations, the method of stratum analysis is necessary. This paper first explains the concept of chronological layers used in the method of stratum analysis; briefly introduces the previous works on Sino-Korean pronunciations; finally, examines the internal analysis, comparative method, application of the Chinese historical phonology, Chinese historical texts, and study of “original characters” to the study of Sino-Korean pronunciations.
