Our growing concerns about environmental degradation and destruction have focused attention on the term "ecosystem" . Using the ecosystem concepts developed in ecology coupled with systems thinking, efforts have been made to describe the phenomena of ecosystem which has natural and human environment.
Analyses of the urban ecosystem researches, regional watershed ecosystem studies, and ecosystem approaches in ecology would reveal some methods relevant to planning and managing integrative natural - human environment. Based upon the investigations, four major concepts that could be applicable to environmental planning and management can be identified ; 1) input / output analysis of the flow of material, energy, and information among elements of an ecosystem and its surrounding environment, 2) descriptions of functional and structural interrelationships among components, 3) identification of cybernetical control mechanism, 4) formation of locational patterns which primarily influenced by the land suitability of an ecosystem.
An ecosystem modeling approach is proposed for sustainable planning and management of environment such as watershed and esturiane regions which include natural and human environment. The method is based upon ecosystem concepts, systems approach, and the four major concepts identified in this study.
The key components and their interrelationships that influence the planning and management of an ecosystem can be more easily identified through its framework. It can reveal input / output flow between an ecosystem and its environment. It can encourage interdisciplinary research and provide decision makers with a reference framework for formulating various strategies.
