This study is a task attempted to clarify characteristics of the changes of spatial structure in the process of reclamation work. The place to be studied is Sinan Gun, one of coastal regions of the southwestern islands. In this study, coastline restoration work has been performed by GIS based on high-precision, three-dimensional image satellite data to examine characteristics of changes in the process of reclamation and reclamation pattern precisely and objectively. As a result, maps could be prepared at the main point of a time of reclamation, and used as analysis data. The results are as follows : 1. Reclamation in Korea started with a temporary purpose for marine safety and procurement of military food in 1235 as the necessity in a place of refuge rather than territorial integrity and security of farmland. It was one of the characteristics in our history that reclamation work was progressed from islands rather than inland, which differs from general methods in which it is progressed from inland to the ocean. 2. As a result of the study, topographical maps of the islands in Sinan Gun have been prepared at each time, including the early stage before reclamation(17C), at the end of the Chosun Dynasty(1910), under the Japanese rule(1930), after liberation(1960), and at the present time(2000). 3. Reclamation work in Sinan Gun had been achieved from 1728 to the late 1980s. The area is 175.5㎢, increased by 23.3% of a total area. The complicated coastline has been changed to a simpler form, and the area of the shortened coastline is 654.79km, corresponding to 27.1%. 4. Reclamation work on the islands of Sinan Gun showed characteristics of changes that had been progressed by stages. The first is a stage that secures land by building a sea wall in the place of a bay running deep into the land. Second, is a stage that is progressed in a form of connecting neighboring islands, and third is a stage that connects large islands with small islands or extends the reclaimed area adding existing reclaimed land. 5. Before reclamation began, Sinan Gun had many islands with a very complicated coastline. However, the present topography was completed as several islands have been put together and a coastline has been simply arranged by building a sea wall since the beginning of the reclamation work.
