Seedcoat and cotyledon of viable and nonviable gourd (Lagenaria siceraria Standl) seeds were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Viable and nonviable gourd seeds were classified by near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy used with a multivariate classification model of discriminant partial least squares (PLS) 2 method. The PLS 2 model predicted 96% viable and 95% nonviable seeds from unknown samples. Three spots on the seedcoat and cotyledon surfaces of ten seeds were observed to see some differences between viable and nonviable seeds after the seeds were separated by NIR. There were no specific differences in seedcoat structure between viable and nonviable seeds. However, numerous bacteria masses were detected on the nonviable cotyledon surfaces, while not in the viable cotyledon.
