The Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM) is a dominant mode of the climate variability of the Northern Hemisphere extratropics during boreal winter. It affects the whole Northern Hemisphere climate system and its train is remarkably noticeable through the following spring, summer, and autumn. Different studies on the relationships between the NAM and ENSO reveal rather controversial results. On the one hand, the positive (negative)NAM polarity tends to be associated with cold (warm) ENSO episodes. On the other hand, statistical significance of such relationships is very low in both empirical and model studies. A statistical study yielded that the response of NAM to the ENSO significantly differs between opposite phases of the 11-year solar cycle. During solar cycle maxima, the ENSO impact on the NAM is insignificant throughout the whole troposphere and lower stratosphere. During solar cycle minima, the ENSO strongly impacts the lower stratospheric NAMas well as tropospheric circulation.
