The prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) is a member of the Cactaceae family and is widely distributed in the semiarid countries throughout the world. Most of Cactaceae family is known to be therapeutic properties for arthritis, cancer, and so on. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Opuntia humifusa (OH) extract in carbon tetrachloride (CCI₄)-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. In rats receiving CCI₄, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly increased at 24, 48, and 72 h after CCI₄ administration. In contrast, rats received OH had less elevation of ALT, AST and ALP than rats received CCI₄ alone. Reduced serum total protein, albumin, and A/G ratio after CCI₄ administration were elevated by OH treatment. Histopathological evaluation showed that extensive necrosis of hepatocytes in centrilobular regions of the liver in rats received CCI₄ were ameliorated by OH treatment. We concluded that administration of OH has hepatoprotective effects in amelioration of CCI₄-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats.
