The amount of formaldehyde removed by five species of indoor plants was assessed in a sealed chamber (1 ㎥ volume) with the gaseous formaldehyde of about 2 ㎕·L-1 for 5 h. The potted plants were defoliated by 0, 1/3 and 2/3 of each pots leaves. The amount of formaldehyde removal (㎍·m-3) calculated as not dividing by leaf area merely decreased a little bit with increasing defoliation rate. On the other hand, the rate of formaldehyde removal per unit leaf area (㎍·m-3·㎝-2 leaf area) reversely increased as defoliated. There was a difference in the rate of formaldehyde removal per unit leaf area by the same species between various leaf areas. Therefore, the compensating equation of the rate of formaldehyde removal per leaf area was developed. First, model of the rate of formaldehyde removal per leaf area was developed by Beer-Lambert law and Michaelis-Menten-type equation. R-square values of this model were estimated to be more than 0.93 in five species. As a result, the compensating equation and the estimated representative value of parameters were described by (-0.0128 t² + 0.1351 t + 0.0463) - [1.7802 × e-1.6367 × L × t / (3.2864 + t)] where t is determined by time after gas initial exposure and L is leaf area.
