The paper reflects an on-going interest in how to make sense of cultural differences in communications patterns. It draws upon a recent review of research on cultural influences conducted for the European action Cost269, which systematically constructed a typology of the different types of cultural factors that have been considered in previous studies. These included such factors as social values, gendered patterns of work, communication norms, time structures and various aspects of material cultural that can all vary both between and within countries. The aim of that work was to provide a checklist of aspects to consider when trying to make sense of cultural and, especially but not only, national differences in communication.
In this paper this general framework was then applied to some British case studies, which had followed the communication choices of some family members over the course of a day. The goal is to move beyond the general observations made in various different national studies, such as the fact the mobile phones are used for organising logistics, or texting often involves a gift relationship. Acknowledging variations within countries and change over time, the paper considers the detail of what is it about daily life in different cultures that makes a difference to communication patterns, including the ways in which mobile telephony is used.
