    Coffer dam and its substructure, temporary drainage pipes are kinds of temporary structures required for dam construction procedure. Temporary drainage pipes accomplish water cushion effect which reduces damage caused by excessive flood over coffer dam's design flood. Up to now, temporary drainage pipes are designed by a trial-and-error method depending on designer's experience without a properly suggested design procedure. In this study, an automatic design tool is developed, which means the ineffective design process with a trial-and-error method is improved and designers can design temporary drainage pipes automatically using a personal computer. Moreover, Harmony Search, a powerful heuristic optimization method, is introduced in this tool to find an optimal design that minimizes construction cost and operation cost. Application of this tool to Youngweol dam and comparison of the results with the original design show both increment of convenience in design procedure and astonishing reduction of the cost.
