We have confirmed, with the measurements of the scintillation discharge and leakage current, that the average scintillation discharge counts per unit time until the occurrence of ignition could be used as a best criterion for the evaluation of the tendency to track of EPDM rubber. We have also investigated the effect of artificial acid rain on the tracking phenomena of EPDM. We could observe that tracking degradation of EPDM is initiated by the formation of dry band and generation of scintillation discharge due to the average leakage current. We have found that the overall process of tracking degradation, after the initial generation of conducting residue, is dependent on the material(EPDM) itself and governed by the pyrolysis due to the energy of scintillation discharge. We have confirmed, from the decrease of the time to ignition(tig) with the aging term, that the acid rain accelerated the tracking degradation and failure of EPDM. We have found that the average scintillation discharge counts per unit time increased significantly with the aging term, however, the average value of leakage current per unit time only showed the slight increase trend. We could conclude that the decrease of the required energy for the formation conducting residue, originated from the aging of EPDM insulation itself such as the decrease of bonding emergy of some chemical bonds near the surface of EPDM rubber attacked by artificial acid rain, may be responsible for the decrease of tracking resistance of EPDM.
