The purpose of this study is to forecast the eutrophication using an eutrophication forecasting model which is based on the WASP5 water quality model and incorporates a trophic status classification module. A trophic status classification module is developed to automatically visualize the eutrophication classification from the result of water quality simulation by WASP5. In this study, hydraulic, hydrologic, geographic and climatic data as well as water quality data from Daecheong reservoir and its catchment area were collected and analyzed in various ways so the data could be suitable for the input format of the eutrophication model. Future waste loads were calculated using the unit pollutant and increment ratio of waste loads. Applying the developed eutrophication forecasting model for the study area, water quality and trophic status for 1996, 2001 and 2006 were forecasted. From the result of the model application, it was found that the eutrophication at the Daecheong reservoir will be going on progressively and especially at the Janggegyeo site, severe eutrophication was forecasted after the year of 2001. It was concluded that the model developed can give useful information for the water quality conservation of Daecheong reservoir.
