This paper investigates the pre-exile poetics of one of the most internationally renowned contemporary Chinese poets―Bei Dao, who was exiled from China after the 1989 Tiananmen Student Movement. His poetry was later to be labelled ‘Misty poetry’ (Menglongshi)―emphasising polyvalent imagery and irregular syntax, it engenders a multiplicity of meanings, often leading to interpretational indeterminacy. This paper focuses on his pre-exile Misty poetry via its constituents of Mistiness, which I believe is the consequence of a double rebellion―on the one hand, against orthodox “Chineseness” (encompassing governmental control and transparent language etc.), and on the other, against traditional Chinese poetics. This rebellion explains his embarkation on an unconventional Misty poetics: against the clarity of Socialist Realism and the conventions of traditional poetics.
