Dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) in diverse freshwater ecosystems ranges from 0.3 to 76 µg P l⁻¹. However, in a large lake DOP seems to vary within a narrow range, indicating near steady-state concentration of DOP. Major fraction of natural DOP seems to be composed of molecules less than 20,000 MW. Interestingly, a significant fraction of DOP has been reported to be refractory in freshwaters. Hydrolysis of DOP has been studied by using model substrates in aquatic ecosystems. Mechanisms and enzymes involved in DOP-hydrolysis have been understood. This approach however can not represent diverse components of DOP (i.e. large molecules vs small molecules). Recently, utilization of in situ DOP in bacterial fraction of lakewaters has been measured. Turnover times of in situ DOP were comparable to those reported by model substrates. This approach might be useful to study refractory DOP, utilization of DOP by bacteria, and production of DOP by microbial loop organisms. For the regeneration of DOP, much less information are available than hydrolysis of DOP. It seems that P-regeneration as DOP seems to be a significant mode in regeneration of P via grazing. Further, differences in P cycles in oligotrophic and eutrophic environments should be taken into account for better management of freshwater environments.
