Undifferentiated stem cells can be isolated from inner cell mass (ICM) cells (give rise to embryonic stem, or ES cells) or primordial germ cells (PGC) (give rise to embryonic germ, or EG cells) of mammalian embryos. Both ES and EG cells share many features including their morphology and capability of differentiating into various cell lineages. ES and EG cell lines have been established in many mammalian species. Recently, the isolation of human ES and EG cells was reported. Considering the limited source of cells for the use of transplantation, undifferentiated human stem cells have enormous potential because these cells can theoretically be differentiated into any cell types that can be grafted to patients. Particularly, the procedure named therapeutic cloning gives an opportunity to produce cells and tissues that graft rejections can be avoided. Such procedure involves the nuclear transfer (NT) of patients healthy somatic cells into enucleated oocytes, isolation of ES cells from NT embryos and differentiati ... 전체 초록 보기
