To study the environmental conditions and phytoplankton ecology of tidal front area, several cruises were carried out bimonthly in the mid-eastern coast of Yellow Sea. The distribution of water temperatures showed that these study areas were well mixed by the strong cold winds in the winter season, but the offshore areas were stratified by the strong thermoclines during the summer season. Coastal areas are well mixed by the tidal action around the year. With the boundary of tidal front, suspended substances and nutrients were high in the coastal mixed waters, while these showed low concentrations at the surface of outer stratified waters. Under the thermoclines of stratified waters, chlorophyll maximum layers were maintained by the deep transparency and the supply of nutrients. Chlorophyll maximum communities were mainly composed of tychopelagic diatoms. High standing crops of nanophytoplankton were found at the thermocline layers of stratified waters. The distributions of bacteria concentration were similar to the chlorophyll distributions. Generally, high chlorophyll concentrations and high primary productivities in the front area were formed by the good light condition and the full supply of nutrients. The seasonal formation of tidal fronts influenced the distributions of S. S., nutrients, chlorophyll, bacteria, primary productivities and phytoplankton composition.
