This essay deals with the topics of Victorian father and ideal fatherhood represented in Dinah Mulock Craik’s John Halifax, Gentleman. Nineteenth-century socal and cultural perceptions of manliness had been multiple and diverse as to changing definitions of gender norm during the period. Early and mid-Victorian ideal man was supposed to manifest womanly virtues, including moral character, tenderness, and gentleness, in his daily behavior at home and workplace. Towards the late nineteenth century, the domestic manhood of womanly virtues was discouraged and criticized for its lack of masculinity. Social expectations of father and fatherhood changed along with masculine ideal. This essay will be concerned with early and mid-Victorian understanding of manliness and fatherhood and will focus on how Craik represents her version of the ideal male figure, John Halifax, in terms of his domestic role and fatherhood. John Halifax’s masculine identity as a father is successfully normalized, as I argue, because his gentlemanly manhood is constructed by his moral integrity superior to other kinds of manliness. With an emphasis on moral aspect, Craik’s ideal male figure is able to demonstrate that his superior masculinity is achieved through his ability of integrating womanliness into being a good father.
