초록· 키워드

Since the 1960s, Korea’s construction industry has made tremendous strides, assuming a firm position as a core element of the nation’s economic growth. Even while enduring such crises as the collapse of Seongsu Bridge and Sampoong Department Store, Korea’s construction technology has achieved great advances to a world-class level, readily competing with advanced nations. However, as we move beyond the era of machinery, electrics and electronics, to step forward into the era of ecology at the dawn of the 21st century, Korea’s construction technology is faced with a new challenge. Plans for large-scale construction such as roads and dams invariably encounter opposition from environmentalists and the social expenses incurred as the result are practically incalculable. Consequently, the development of construction technology focused on ensuring the compatibility of development with the environment has emerged as the crucial issue for the construction sector. In the development of environment-friendly construction technology, it must first be conceded that while the existing construction has performed a positive role in the development of national economy, it has had a negative impact on the environment. Our land, covered in concrete and asphalt, reveals the noticeable problem of a deteriorating environment and the loss of the scenic beauty and amenity offered by nature. In order to promote environmentally sound and sustainable development, the issue of air, water and soil pollution as well as waste control must be resolved, along with a clear-cut understanding of the damage that may be inflicted on the ecological system and the natural landscape from construction activities. The passionate dispute between developers and environmentalists in Korea, which has attained rapid economic growth in a short span of time on the back of aggressive development, cannot be resolved with the one-sided logic of either the development-focused sector nor the environmentalists. Accordingly, the most urgent and important task is to develop environment-friendly construction technology that contributes to an improved quality of life by achieving harmony of nature and environment. This can become the factor that can determine the future course of our society.
