This paper explores the issue of inequality and democracy in Latin America. We examine the trend of income inequality and poverty in the post-democratic transition of selected Latin American countries. We also explore whether citizens` perceptions and assessments of inequality correspond with objective income inequality, and whether citizens link subjective assessments about inequality with their support for democracy. Further, the paper analyzes the link between political institutions, government partisanship, and income inequality in Latin America. We find that the institutional effect is weaker than the government partisanship effect in ameliorating inequality in the region.
