The Coot (Fulica atra) was recorded as a migratory bird in winter and spring/fall season in the past, however it was later identified as a breeding species in South Korea. This study was conducted in order to investigate the protection of coot"s breeding ecology. The field survey was conducted in Namyang Lake, Gyeonggi-do from June 2008 to October 200. The maximum number of the individuals was 163 individuals in June. The form of the nests included the inner size (29.82±4.23 cm), outer size (40.54±7.13 cm), nest entrance (44.57±13.05 cm), depth (8.13±1.32 cm), and height (13.21±2.05 cm). The nest materials were Trapa japonica, Zizania latifolia, Phragmites communis, etc. The direction of the nest entrance is crossed by the lake. The plant density around the nests was 61±25 ㎡ (1×1 m). The nests were placed in a distance of 24·n<30 m from the waterfront. The depth of the nests in water were most in 40·n<50 cm. The density of the nests was 0.3/1000 ㎡ and the distance of nests was 98.92±17.43 m. In the breeding rate, the eggs of clutch size (7.36±2.07), hatching rate (72.83%), fledgling rate (92.23%), final breeding rate (67.17%) were studied. The egg was measured in long length (51.32±2.44 mm), short length (35.19±1.35 mm), and weight (36.22±1.90 g). In the artificial breeding of coot, the bill and tarsus were quickly growing in 14 days and others were growing between two and four weeks. The potential preys were T. japonica, Z. latifolia, P. communis, Cloeon dipterum, Micronecta sedula, Carassius cuvieri, Cyprinus carpio, etc. The monthly behavior had a high value of feeding and nesting in May, and the diurnal behavior was high from at ten and eleven o’clock. Finally, the disturbance was high in April due to fishermen.
