This paper accounts for the syntactic behavior and pragmatic function of inverted locatives in feature checking mechanism. On the observation that the postverbal thematic subject in the locative inversion construction is focalized, the inverted locative is assumed to have the status of topic. Proposing that locative inversion is motivated to check the EPP property on [Top] feature in the C-system, this paper explains the properties of inverted locatives that pattern both with subject and topic in terms of economy condition on feature checking on the basis of T-to-C.
