As a largest country in South East Asia, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. Jakarta is the economic center of Indonesia, which leads young people congregate in Jakarta and makes this city as one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. This movement cause a rapid population growth (densely populated urban phenomenon) that especially occupied by citizens aged around 25-35 or young professional from all over the country, which expand the demand of small-sized (1-2 person) housing. As 99% of residential area in Jakarta consists of detached houses, the lack of residential land appears to be a huge concern for people there. Despite the existence of apartment, people in the city tend to choose to live in the house due to the uncomfortable interior condition of the small apartment room.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristic of studio apartment in jakarta, which later on can be used to develop an assisted manual of small high efficient living space specifically in terms of its function for those young generations, based on user needs, their culture, living habits, their average ergonomic size, and the environmental condition of jakarta. For this purpose, data were collected through site visits of four studio apartments as part of the best practices study, targets demand and/or user needs through the distribution of related questionnaire to 25-35 years old young people who lives in Jakarta, and ③ official data statistic research through direct interview and reliable sources.
From the collected data, people demand maximized functional living space yet comfortable with a modern, natural, and high tech design. These young generations require huge saving space (such as dressing area) and entertain space (such as game area) packed in a small space, considering their dwelling must be in a strategic location and low price. The research showed that Jakarta’s apartments need many improvements in order to create desirable & comfortable small living space. Accordingly, the study of studio apartment"s characteristic in Jakarta analyze the existing size, interior and surrounding condition, and users needs to support achieving a maximum functional living space is necessary to be specified.
