For the proposal of eutrophication control techniques by chemical treatment, algicidal effects of copper chemicals were compared and laboratory study about the inhibition effect of copper on algal growth with copper-citrate was carried out using isolated strain of Microcystis aeruginosa which grows abundantly and forms water bloom in the eutrophied waterbody many times. Among three chemicals(Copper sulfate, copper-citrate Cu-chelate) copper-citrate was the most effective to algal removal probably because of high solubility of copper ion. When copper-citrate was dosed at the initial phase of algal growth, EC₅₀ was 0.112 mg/l Cu²⁺ and the maximum growth amount of 0.2 mg/l Cu²⁺ dosed culture was 53 % of that cf control. On the other hand there was little difference in specific growth rates between control and copper-citrate (0.05, 0.2 mg/l Cu²⁺) dosed cultures when chemical dosed in the exponential growth phase. So from the results of this study we suggest that to inhibit the abnormal growth of bloom-forming algae, copper chemicals will be effective if it is added to eutrophied waterbody when exponential growth of algae is not initiated and the suggested copper dosage is 0.2~0.5 mg/l .
