    Calorie restriction (CR) can delay the onset of age-associated diseases and extend lifespan in a variety of organisms from yeast to human. Genetic and molecular studies in model organisms suggested that the effect of CR on lifespan can be recapitulated by modulating nutrient signaling pathways. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used to identify genetic modulators and cellular processes that affect CR-mediated lifespan extension. Three nutrient-sensing kinases, Tor1, cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), and Sch9 are known to be associated with CR-mediated lifespan extension in yeast.
