Inflammation is a complex process regulated by a cascade of cytokines, growth factors, nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandins (PGs) produced by activated macrophages. Activated macrophages play a pivotal role in inflammatory diseases via excess production of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and other inflammatory mediators such as NO and PGE₂. Hence, substances which inhibit the productions of these inflammatory mediators or cytokines are considered as potential anti-inflammatory agents. Sargassium serratifolium ethanolic extract (ESS) and its anti-inflammatory mechanisms were assessed using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages.
